Hi Mary,
Are you sure it's a Gilman quote? It doesn't ring a bell. However, Rebecca West said something very much like that in 1913: "I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat."
Best wishes,
Denise Knight

Subject: [Gilman-l] Quote query
I am trying to find what I believe is a fairly famous quote by Charlotte
Perkins Gilman where she says something to the effect that if she speaks
out more than would a doormat she is disparaged. Do you have a
recollection of such a quote? Or where I might find it? Thank you very
much for any ideas –
With best regards,
